Varanasi, Madurai on latest list of Smart Cities :

• The implementation of Smart City Mission is now spread over 27 States and Union Territories. The Centre plans to transform 100 cities by 2019-20 by providing Rs. 48,000 crore in financial support over five years.

What is a Smart City? A Smart City has basic infrastructure, uses ‘smart’ solutions to make infrastructure and services better, and relies on Area based development.

Objectives :

• Provide basic infrastructure.

• Quality of life.

• Clean and sustainable environment.

• Apply Smart Solutions

• Set examples to be replicated both within and outside the Smart City and catalyze the creation of similar Smart Cities.

The core infrastructure elements in a smart city would include:

1. adequate water supply,

2. assured electricity supply,

3. sanitation, including solid waste management,

4. efficient urban mobility and public transport,

5. affordable housing, especially for the poor,

6. robust IT connectivity and digitalization,

7. good governance, especially e-Governance and citizen participation,

8. sustainable environment,

9. safety and security of citizens, particularly women, children and the elderly,

10. health and education.
