WHAT CLAT TEST UNDER THIS SECTION: BASIC RULES OF GRAMMAR
Sentence = basic unit of grammar. It has two components:
1) SUBJECT = subject matter of sentence
2) PREDICATE= description about subject /action of subject.
Example: Rita loves oranges= Rita – subject, loves oranges = predicate.
Points to note: 1) Subject may be sometimes longer than predicate
2) Subject may follow predicate
3) There may be invisible subject
Note: above concepts not asked in clat directly but they are basics to answer any grammar question.
Phrase= incomplete sentence which make sense.
TYPES OF PHRASES: Noun Phrase - His elder brother - noun
: Verb Phrase - running over the - verb
: Adverb Phrase - through the side lane - adverb
: Adjective Phrase - large to the - adjective
: Preposition Phrase - under the bridge - preposition
CLAUSE: incomplete sentence + it has subject and predicate. Eg: that shines so bright.
