CURRENT AFFAIRS 1 : HARSH LANGUAGE TO BE A COGNISABLE OFFENCE

The Telangana government has identified offences under

• Sections 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and • 507 (criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication) of Indian Penal Code

as cognizable offences that could be investigated without court permission.

Why it is so special ? Section : 506 and 507 comes under non- cognizable cases under IPC but now they are made as cognizable cases by the government.

What are cognizable and non- cognizable cases? Cognizable cases – cases in which Police can take action directly without seeking permission from Court Non- cognizable cases – Permission must be sought from court before registering FIR ( First Information report )

What is the implication ? Earlier : for verbal attack case can be registered only after getting Courts permission Now: Police can act directly no such permission required.

 

CURRENT AFFAIRS 2 : ‘INDIA-ASEAN TIES TO FOCUS ON FREEDOM OF NAVIGATION’

NEWS : Security and freedom of navigation will be in the heart of India-ASEAN cooperation in the twenty-first century, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi

OTHER HILIGHTS : All agreed on establishing a joint mechanism to ensure safety and freedom of navigation in the maritime domain.

 

CURRENT AFFAIRS 3 : HIGHEST CIVILIAN AWARDS

WHAT ARE THESE HIGHEST CIVILIAN AWARDS ? • Bharat Ratna- 1st highest civilian award • Padma Vibhushan – 2nd highest • Padma Bhushan – 3rd highest civilian award. • Padma Shri – 4th Highest civilian award.

Awarded by the Government of India, it is announced every year on India's Republic Day.

Padma Vibhushan winners : Music composer Ilaiyaraaja, Indian classical musician Ghulam Mustafa Khan and P. Parmeswaran, a senior RSS ideologue from Kerala, will receive Padma Vibhushan,

Padma Bhusan winners : • Late Russian ambassador Alexander Kadakin, who served in India from 2009-17, will be given the Padma Bhushan posthumously. • Cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni will also be given the Padma Bhushan. United States-based academic Ved Prakash Nanda, who was among a group of several academics to have written an open letter in 2015 welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, will get the Padma Vibhushan.

Padma Shri winners : Actor Manoj Joshi, who featured in a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) election campaign video in the run- up to the Gujarat Assembly elections last year, will get the Padma Shri.
