SCIENCE AT YOUR DOORSTEP, AT ZERO COST - Bengaluru institute to help organise scientific lectures in apartment complexes


THE NOVEL IDEA : Bengaluru’s National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) has launched an initiative to take science to the people, to their very doorstep, as a matter of fact.


WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE INITIATIVE : The initiative, called Science and the City.


WHAT IT DOES ? It encourages apartment complexes to host lectures on popular science topics on their own premises, at no cost.


WHO CAN LISTEN TO IT ? The lectures will be suitable for anyone above 15 years of age.


WHAT WOULD BE THE THEME OF THESE LECTURES ? The topics cover a wide range, from conservation and environment, genes and evolution, ecology and animal behaviour, molecules and cells, to health and medicine.

LIST FACILITIES AT REFUGEE CAMPS: SC : Rohingya or Indian, all are equally entitled to civic amenities, says the court


EQUALITY IS EQUALITY : The fundamental right to basic amenities and a dignified life cannot be confined to the Rohingya alone, but has to extend to their Indian neighbours living in the same slum.


WHO SAID THIS ? The Supreme Court Justice D.Y. Chandrachud .

WHEN IT WAS STATED ? It was stated while the court was hearing PIL pleas to provide the refugees with basic amenities.


WHAT WAS THE LEGAL POINT BEHIND IT ? Article 21 was equally applicable to all, whether an Indian citizen or not.

FINAL DIRECTION ? The court directed the government to submit a report on the basic amenities provided to Rohingya camps in Delhi and Haryana.

ARE FOREIGNERS GETTING HEARTS BEFORE INDIANS?: TRANSPLANTS NODAL BODY SEEKS CLARITY FROM HOSPITALS


NEWS : The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) is seeking greater clarity from hospitals on cadaver hearts allocated to foreign nationals for transplantation.


WHAT IS THE ISSUE ? In Organ donation priority list even thought Indians stand first foreigners are given their turn early due to cost advantage of selling organs to a foreign national.


THE JUSTICE SEEKER : NOTTO members, in a meeting in Delhi last week, discussed why an Indian patient may not be allocated the organ when it’s her rightful turn, and explored measures to remedy such practices.


HOW PRIORITY IS GIVEN IN ORGAN TRANSPLANT INDIA ? As per protocol, Indian patients are always given first priority.


WHAT IS THE STATUS OF FOREIGNERS ? Only when we don’t have an Indian patient, say, due to a blood group or weight mismatch, or in cases when the Indian candidate refuses the organ for some reason, a foreigner is given the opportunity.

CHINA WILL NOT INTERFERE IN NIRAV MODI’S ARREST


CHINA’S STRAND : China said that it would not interfere in the possible arrest of Nirav Modi, and Hong Kong could take a decision based on the Indian request.
