What happened?
· The annual reports of the United States based Freedom House and the Sweden based V-Dem Institute has downgraded and redesigned Indian democracy.
CORE AREA : Indian farmer’s safety and curbs to press freedom in the context of the ongoing protests by farmers against the Three farm laws has been debated in British Parliament.
What Ministry of External Affairs say ?
· India may encourage one of the Indian independent think tanks to bring out its own annual world democracy report based on comprehensive parameters as well as an annual global freedom of press index.
· The report had said that India “has continued on a path of steep decline to the extent it has almost lost its status as a democracy”.
POINT TO NOTE : The London statement called India ‘the largest functioning democracy in the world’. The keyword here was ‘functioning’.
