LAWXPERTSMV | Manpreet Kaur’s AIR 136 | UPSC Law Optional

From Farmer’s Daughter to IPS Officer: Manpreet Kaur’s (AIR 136) UPSC Law Optional Strategy

The journey to the top of the UPSC list is often paved with moments of doubt, low scores, and relentless revision. Today, we celebrate the success of Manpreet Kaur (AIR 136, UPSC 2025). Coming from a humble background as the daughter of a farmer, Manpreet has realized her dream of joining the Indian Police Service (IPS).

In this blog, she shares the exact strategy that helped her master the Law Optional and how she used Lawxpertsmv to turn her lowest points into her greatest strengths.

From Doubt to Determination: Overcoming Low Phases

Like every serious aspirant, Manpreet also experienced moments of self-doubt—especially during mock tests when scores did not meet expectations. However, instead of stopping, she pushed forward. Consistency during low phases is what separates rankers from the rest.

The "Audio" Secret to Recalling Case Laws

One of the biggest hurdles in Law Optional is the sheer volume of case laws. Manpreet struggled with this until she adopted a unique "active listening" technique.

"I recorded case laws in my own voice and listened to them repeatedly. This helped me immensely; I was able to recall almost all the case laws in the actual paper."

Overcoming the "60-Mark" Hurdle-

Even toppers have bad days. Manpreet recalls being disheartened after her first mock test with Lawxpertsmv, where she scored only 60 marks.

  • The Problem: She was writing "fine" answers but lacked the pinpoint precision required by UPSC.

  • The Fix: Through our feedback, she learned to stop "bluffing" or filling pages. She started breaking down legal principles into parts, citing specific sections for every aspect, and adding brief facts (1-2 lines) to make the case law relate to the principle.

How Law Optional Boosted Her GS & Ethics Score-

Manpreet is a firm believer that Law isn't just an optional; it’s a tool for the entire exam.

  • Ethics (Score 130): She cited Constitutional provisions and legal doctrines (like the Doctrine of Proportionality) to stand out.

  • GS Paper 2: Her deep understanding of case laws allowed her to provide more authoritative answers.

  • Essay: She used the "evolution of law" to provide historical and structural depth to her essays.

Lawxpertsmv Material & Its Role-

Manpreet highlighted an important aspect regarding study material:

“I had already prepared my notes, otherwise I would have referred to Lawxpertsmv material, as it is refined and avoids bulky books.”

She emphasized that:

  • Lawxpertsmv material is concise and exam-oriented

  • It helps avoid unnecessary reading from bulky standard books

  • It provides ready-to-use structured content

  • Test Series & Evaluation: Identified gaps in answers and improved structure and precision

  • Model Answers: Value Addition

  • Feedback Mechanism: Highlighted missing elements and Built answer-writing mindset

  • Mentorship: Helped her understand; Importance of keywords and Precision in law answers.

Manpreet subscribed to our Test Series twice, including full-length and subject-wise tests.

"I couldn't pinpoint where I was lacking until the feedback from Lawxpertsmv. They mentioned specific cases I missed and taught me how every word in Law counts. The institute's model answers helped me enhance my notes with material I had missed in standard books."

The "1-1-1" Revision Strategy

After Prelims, she followed a strict 3-month cycle:

  • Month 1: Dedicated entirely to Law Optional.

  • Month 2: Dedicated entirely to General Studies (GS).

  • Month 3: A 10-10 split (10 days for Law, 10 days for GS).

This ensured: Strong optional preparation and simultaneous GS coverage

2. Resource Management

Manpreet emphasizes sticking to basics.

  • Constitution: Relied on MP Jain, but used Lawxpertsmv notes to condense the "bulky" portions into exam-ready points.

  • International Law: SK Kapoor.

When to Start Test Series?

Manpreet followed a disciplined approach:

✔First complete the syllabus once, then begin:

  • Previous Year Questions

  • Test Series

Manpreet Kaur’s journey proves that:

  • Success comes from consistent improvement.

  • Law Optional rewards precision and practice, and

  • Structured guidance accelerates results

“Initially, I often felt demotivated after reviewing my answers. However, over time, this improved significantly with consistent practice and by referring to the model answers provided by the institute, especially the case law integration. I am truly grateful to you and the entire team for their support and guidance. Thank you so much.”

Final Advice for Aspirants:

"Don't fill pages—fill the demand of the question." In Law, quality beats quantity. You cannot "bluff" your way through a Law paper. Stick to one solid material per topic, practice consistently, and remember: every centimeter of the UPSC paper is marked.

Congratulations, IPS Manpreet Kaur! Your Lawxpertsmv family is incredibly proud of your journey from the farm to the police academy.
