ARREST WARRANT ISSUED BY U.K. COURT FOR NIRAV MODI
WHAT HAPPENED ? An arrest warrant has been issued for fugitive diamond trader Nirav Modi.
CONCERNED COURT : It was issued by the Westminster Magistrates Court.
SAD TRUTH :
· However, there is currently no indication of when precisely an arrest could be made.
· Britain’s Metropolitan Police have repeatedly declined to comment on the case, saying that no comment on individual cases will be made until and if an arrest had been made.
LEGAL PROCESS : India’s extradition request for Modi, was initiated in connection with the ₹13,000 crore Punjab National bank fraud case, to Westminster Magistrates Court, for approval by a judge earlier this month.
WHAT IS EXTRADITION ? Extradition - the surrender of an accused or convicted person by one state or country to another (usually under the provisions of a statute or treaty)
GOVT HAS TO FRAME SCHEMES; COURTS SHOULD STAY OUT OF GOVERNANCE, SAYS SUPREME COURT
THE VERDICT : It is the sole prerogative of the government to frame schemes, courts should stay out of governance, the Supreme Court said.
WHAT HAPPENED : Uttarakhand High Court for framed a scheme to regularise hundreds of casual workers engaged by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) under the Ministry of Defence in the construction of roads for going to pilgrimage of Char Dham Yatra – this was criticized .
WHEN COURT CAN FRAME RULES ? “It is only in exceptional cases when the court considers it proper to issue appropriate mandatory directions,” Supreme Court held.
POINT TO NOTE : In its judgment, the court recorded that the government has “now framed a welfare scheme for all such casual workers” during the pendency of the case.

WHAT HAPPENED ? The Abel Prize in mathematics was awarded to Karen Uhlenbeck of the U.S.
WHO IS SHE ? Ms. Uhlenbeck, 76, is a visiting senior research scholar at Princeton University, as well as visiting associate at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), both in the U.S.
FOR WHAT ? For her work on partial differential equations, the first woman to win the award, the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters said.
IMPORTANCE : Karen Uhlenbeck receives the Abel Prize 2019 for her fundamental work in geometric analysis and gauge theory, which has dramatically changed the mathematical landscape.
USAGE : Her theories have revolutionised our understanding of minimal surfaces, such as those formed by soap bubbles, and more general minimisation problems in higher dimensions.
ABEL PRIZE ? The prize is named after the 19th century Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel.
Along with the Fields Medal, which is awarded every four years at the Congress of the International Mathematical Union (IMU), it is one of the world's most prestigious maths prizes.
